Doctor, Lawyer, Consultant: Your Document Has Changed
What is an E-Self-Employment Receipt (e-SMM)?
Receipts are now electronic for self-employed professionals. We explained how withholding tax and VAT appear on the receipt, the gross-net calculation, and the most common mistakes made during issuance.

Self-employed professionals issue receipts instead of invoices. Lawyers, doctors, financial advisors, architects, consultants, translators — anyone whose income relies on physical and mental labor falls into this group.
The electronic version of this receipt is the e-SMM (e-Self-Employed Receipt). The document is the same; what changes is how it is issued and stored.
What sets the receipt apart from the invoice
There are two main differences.
Cash basis. An invoice is issued when the service is delivered; payment may come later. A self-employed receipt, however, is issued when the payment is collected. If you haven't received the money, you don't issue a receipt.
Withholding tax (Stopaj). If your client is a tax-registered business, they deduct income tax withholding from the amount they pay and deposit it to the tax office on your behalf. This deduction appears as a separate line on the receipt.
In other words, the money you take home is not the same as the gross amount written on the receipt. Income tracking done without understanding this distinction won't add up at the end of the year.
How is the gross-net calculation set up?
A receipt includes, in order: the gross fee, withholding tax deduction, net fee, calculated VAT, and the total amount collected.
The critical point is this: withholding tax is calculated on the gross amount, and VAT is also calculated on the gross amount. VAT is not calculated on the net amount after withholding tax is deducted. This is one of the most common mistakes.
The amount the client pays you is the sum of the net fee and VAT. The client deposits the withholding tax to the tax office; you offset this in your annual tax return.
If your client is an end consumer, there is no withholding tax; gross and net are the same, and VAT is added on top.
Transition to e-SMM
The scope of e-SMM for self-employed professionals is quite broad; self-employed individuals who are not tax-exempt are expected to join this system. Verify your status through your affiliated professional chamber or financial advisor.
An e-signature is sufficient for the transition; a financial seal is not required since you operate as an individual rather than a company. For details, check out the article on financial seals and e-signatures.
As an issuance method, you can use the Revenue Administration's (GİB) e-SMM portal or a private integrator. The portal is free, but as your receipt volume grows, manual entry becomes exhausting.
Income tracking for freelancers
Income flows irregularly in self-employment: three receipts one month, none the next. That's why viewing the monthly average is more valuable than looking at individual receipts.
Expenses are the same. Office rent, transportation, software subscriptions, professional publications — all of these are items you can deduct from your earnings, and they cannot be deducted if the receipt is not kept. For a practical way to avoid hoarding paper slips, you can check out the expense receipt scanning article.

Frequently asked questions
Can I issue a receipt before receiving the money?
The rule is cash-based. In practice, clients may request a receipt in order to make the payment; clarify this situation with your financial advisor.
Is there withholding tax when issuing a receipt to a foreign client?
Since foreign clients are not responsible for withholding tax in Turkey, no deduction is made. As for the VAT side, it may fall under the service export exemption; check the article on invoicing in service exports.
I issued the receipt incorrectly, what should I do?
The cancellation and dispute process in e-SMM works similarly to e-archive documents. We explained the steps in the cancellation and dispute process article.
Is the withholding tax rate the same for every profession?
While a general rate applies, there may be variations for certain activities. Confirm the rate for your specific activity code with your financial advisor.
The receipt itself is simple; the confusing part is how gross, net, withholding tax, and VAT get tangled together. Once set up correctly, the rest is just repetition.
